A 1999 movie directed by Brian Helgeland starring Mel Gibson, Gregg Henry and Maria Bello , it is based on the novel "The Hunter" by Richard Stark.
The director's cut and the theater cut are quiet different from each other. Both of these have very diferent beginings. The director's cut has a abrupt starting that shows Porter walking on a bridge and he recollects the past in his mind of how his wife betrayed him and his best freind was unjust to him and he was left to die.
Poter is a ex-marine, he is betrayed by a one-time partner, and shot in the back by his wife. He survives and returns, looking to recover his share from the robbery of an Asian crime gang.Porter knows nothin but revenge, he is very determined to get his money back come what may.He is Street-wise and tough man.
Val Resnick a robber and Porter's best freind is a heartless man , selfish man is ready to cause trouble to anyone just for money.
Rosie a hooker wh Porter used to drive everyday to see that she is safe wherever she goes. She helps Porter a lot to get back his 70 grand back.
Mrs. Lynn Porter Porter's wife who betrayed him for money and drugs, lives a ruined life of a drug addict.
In the director's cut the concept is kept the same story has a little different starting and a very different ending compared to the theater cut. Porter goes through two different types of situations and tortures in both the versions.
Val Resnick plans for a robbery , he plans with Poter to rob the Asian crime gang . Val and Lynn backstab him and take his money, because he has to clear his debt to The Outfits.
In the director's cut there is no link shown to how Porter gets to the bartender (Micheal). After Porter kills Val , in the theater cut the story takes a different turn as he asks Rosie to move out with him to a new and safe apartment. In the meanwhile, Carter setsup three men to blow up Porter's apartment,Porter being tte smart one outsmarts Carter's three men. Then Porter goes to meet Carter he tries negotiating with Carter , Carter refuses and Porter asks Carter to call the higher authority(Mrs. Bronson ) and tell him that he wants his money back.Mrs. Bronson doesnt agree to his demand so he kills Carter.
Whereas in the theater cut Carter calls Bronson and asks him for his money he als says that he was next after Firefax. In the meanwhile Johny is another charecter who isnt there in the director's cut , son of Bronson is in a birtday party and ones when he is leaving the party he is meets a hooker (Rosie) and then he is been kidnapped by Rosie and Porter .They kidnap him and keep him at some unknown hotel room. The story is totaly different from the the director's cut here Porter is in Firefax's house asking for the money , there he talks to Bronson asking for the money , here Porter tells Bronson that he kidnapped his son and he would let go only if his son was set free.Later when he comes out of Firefax's mansion Arthur Stegman follows Porter and asks him about the money at gun point, right at that time the asian's come at that spot with full of guns, granedes and fire at the cab in which Porter is there , Porter sneeks out of the car and kills every one except for Pearl. Then right at that spot Firefax's men kidnap Porter and take him to a place, and beat him up .In the meanwhile Bronson comes with the money and asks for his son's whereabout.Smart Porter gives the location of the apartment where he was previously staying with Rosie. Porter is locked in the trunk of the car and he makes his way to the driver's seat, gives a call to the aprtment and Bronson picks it up ,the apartment justs blows up into ash and Porter makes his escape.
In the Director's cut after the Gunbattle between Porter and the Asian gangsters, Porter takes a lorry and goes to the railway station, on the way he finds two Mrs.Bronson's thugs and hijacks them with the car and handcuffs them in the lorry. Then again in the railway station he finds a lot of thugs send by Mrs Bronson to kill Porter he kills them all. Finally when the man arrives with the backpack full of money there is shooting in the railway station and Porter gets shot.He some how manages to escape all the thugs and meet Rosie.
In both the movies the background score for few same scenes are different.Few shots are same but have different camera angles.Like when Porter comes to meet Arthur Stegman they show a glimpse of a train going from left to right whereas in the other version it is vise versa. Both the versions are different in its own ways keeping the same story and concept.
